What is Bio-Individuality?

Bio-individuality is the concept that simply states that there is no “one size fits all” diet.  Everyone has a unique metabolism hence the same food that keep you healthy can be detrimental to another person.  Your unique genetic makeup determines what foods are right for you.  This involves listen to your body as oppose to what society dictates as appropriate.

At the same time I would not render all diet plans useless. A diet plan can be a good starting point or guide when seeking to change your eating regimen. Just remember to treat it as such, a guide not a law that can’t be broken.

In the beginning of my health journey, I started with the Paleo diet. This helped me out tremendously but I didn’t follow it strictly. I chose to keep on eating dairy, specifically cheese. I did stop drinking cow’s milk though. Even though I broke some rules, I still benefited from following the plan and adjusting as I go.

Everyone is unique and beautiful in their own way. We need a diet to match.

The significance of respecting bio-individuality in health and wellness.

“One man’s food is another man’s poison”

Society or the government has guidelines on how people should eat for good health.  The food pyramid and all its variations show how you should eat.  Also when you should eat.  It is said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  What if you never get hungry in the morning?  Do you force yourself to eat even if you’re not hungry?  Listen to your body and try to eat more intuitively. Your body is trying to tell you what it want’s.

There are consequences to not listening to your body.  Eating when you are not hungry has consequences.  Fad diets are the norm these days.  There are so many it is hard to keep up.  These are all “one size fits all “diets.  That is why some have success, and many more have failure.  The consequences are very evident.

Most of us have seen family or co-workers go from diet fad to diet fad. In my opinion, many of these “Weight Loss” programs are designed to keep you as a customer than to help you make lasting lifestyle changes (Weight Watchers I am looking at you).

So start eating real food, the kind of food that does not come in a box and does not have instructions. Listen to your body and intuition.
